In October 1962, the Cuban missile crisis occurred and with it, the possibility of a nuclear confrontation between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. To open the lines of communications between the two countries and help prevent "mutually assured destruction," a hotline was activated, Aug. 30, 1963.
