WASHINGTON -- Iraqi forces continue to make steady progress in the effort to retake Mosul from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, the commander of Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve said today. "The Iraqi security forces had developed a lot of momentum over the past two years," Army Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend told Pentagon reporters during a teleconference from Baghdad. "Now we're seeing that momentum continue against ISIL, our common enemy, in Mosul."

"Fire in the hole!" a Soldier shouted from behind a sandy berm. A translator echoed the warning to the others, who also crouched. A moment of silence was followed by a deafening explosion that boomed through the mountains of Tajikistan. No one was hurt. This was just an exercise. It was part of the Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) training course in Tajikistan, September 19 to 30, during which U.S. Soldiers instructed 39 service members and civilians from Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and Armenia about proper demining procedures.

"I am confident that the Iraqis are up to this task," Army Maj. Gen. Gary J.
